hello

hope you have been looking up at the sky a lot lately. shooting stars, lunar eclipses, bright white moon, red too, or maybe orange. meteor shower tonight. there's a lot to see!

this week there are two seaweedsway shows which are also conspiracy of venus performances, thursday in berkeley and sunday in sf. the choir has shifted a bit this year, and i feel like i've had to step it up a little and learn the songs more (ha. ah.), so i'm even more excited to be singing w/ the group. we are bringing back some old songs, and sharing some of the newer ones too. by leonard cohen, joni mitchell, tom waits, rufus wainwright, & even one by our director joyce todd mcbride herself. both nights will be holiday themed. if you're into that. would love to see you there!!

hey everyone!
hope you all are well.

i added a last minute show tonight (tuesday) & wanted to let you all know... this newly formed duo, WELL-WORN, is touring through from Upstate, NY & Ontario, Canada, & features accordion, guitar, autoharp and drums. their album name, "Live Under the Sea", is fitting for a Seaweed Sway show! named so because they recorded in bandmember Matt's childhood bedroom, which is sponge painted in an "ocean-themed" blue-green color scheme. we like the ocean!!

Adam Kirk is opening the night, at 9:30, doors at 9. in Adam's words: "i used to play guitar for the beautiful Joan Baez, then i played guitar for the mystical Sean Hayes - how lucky i be! i'll be singing songs that i have written." excited to hear his tunes again!

Montana Rose!! you may know her from Conspiracy of Venus. lucky for us, she has her own songs too! her lyrics will snatch your attention as you find your head bobbing to melodies backed by Mandi (her mandolin). Always a treat when she is accompanied by local percussion talent, Rob Johnson.

hello everyone,

i hope you all are well. a lot going on in the world, the earth is shaking and the revolution is happening. also a good time to try and stay low to the ground and connected to those things that nourish us.

i'm writing to tell you about the 3 seaweedsway shows this month, starting this sunday. trying to pare it down, get a mini-break, though i will continue to post lots of recommendations at http://facebook.com/theseawedsway

at the bottom of this message, there's a little note about this whole project, as it slows down a bit for revisioning & refocusing into the new year. i learned today this is what the black bear does as well, a semi-hibernation, for kidney restoration, with a little bit of work still.*

additionally, below, if you wanna get political, there are a few links related to the occupy wall street movement: a synopsis of the occupy oakland gatherings & general strike, a way to protest postage-paid via junkmail credit card offers, encouragement to switch your bank tomorrow if you haven't done so yet, & overhead footage of the thousands of people walking together on wednesday. this seems like a holy shit moment in history. + tuesday -vote! i think john avalos is the way to go in the mayor realm. i will post the kate slate on fb if you want some suggestions for the specifics...

seaweedsway project news:

starting in january, for the new year, seaweedsway will travel to the east bay once a month, on fourth saturdays.

so that's third sundays at the make-out room in sf on 22nd st. & fourth saturdays at the starry plough in berkeley, if you want to pre-mark your calendars.

for those who have contacted me about booking shows, thank you. as a general update: i'm slowing down in that arena, at least for the next couple of months, til 2012. i may have suggestions of people to contact if you'd like them. i am overwhelmed with the maintenance of daily life & needing to clean my room & house & practice yoga & music & have fun & take care of logistics of living in sf, so need to step back a little & get perspective on it all. :) i still will help out where & when i can, & intend to promote the shows i hear about that float through & i know enough about to endorse. am hoping to focus a bit more on the monthly shows at the make-out room & starry plough, amnesia, chasing the moon, conspiracy of venus, & fun collaborations.

tonight! i'm very excited to finally get to see antonio roman-alcala's film, in search of good FOOD, documenting and interviewing a variety of players in CA's sustainable food system. (features some music from slow motion cowboys!) ALSO, it's a benefit for the non-profit i've worked at for 7 years, earthshare california. we raise $ for over 80 environmental non-profits, covering a spectrum of issues & topics - clean air & water, healthy sustainable food, land conservation, care of the great sea, mountain lions, desert tortoises, and beyond. it's at el rio in the outer mission, and is gonna be a really fun night. pocket full of rye is playing music after the film, then there will be a few more local films. networking happy hour 6-8 to start the night. would mean a lot to see you there!

then, this weekend, i'll be living at amnesia apparently. friday is the long-awaited beehavers' cd release. and to add to the glory, they are releasing not one but two cd's. what?!!! gypsy voodoo folk-rock-n-roll at it's finest. arborea from maine are opening. i've heard some of their songs and am in awe and intrigued. beautiful. magic leaves are closing off the night with some psych-folk-rock joy for our souls. can't wait. unmissable. this show is worth changing all your plans to attend.

sunday!!! super sweet show w/ new music (for me) ~ the show was built around rock falls, who are on tour. singer/songwriter annie reese has such an incredible voice ~ can't get enough of the songs i've heard already. "hushed & haunting" joseph childress will end the night with his moving & powerful renditions of stories ~waves of sound to move us along. opening the night is this band i've literally been listening to on repeat since two weeks ago, when i first heard of 'em. my new favorite band. assateague. they're local, don't play out much & are gracing us with their songs on this night. really important to arrive early & see 'em! doors at 8:30, show at 9. this is also a long-awaited collaboration w/ seaweedsway & arvel hernandez's collective project, endless nest.

LITTLE WINGS
Little Wings was formed in San Luis Obisbo, CA, and the music of Little Wings carries the landscape of its place of origin like clouds carry water vapor, to release it in a myriad of forms over a changing landscape. Little wings is a project that revolves around frontman and songwriter Kyle Field, sometimes with drummer Adam Selzer, keyboardist Rob Kieswetter, bassist Mark Leece, and others. His debut album, Discover Worlds of Wonder , was released in 1999 by Walking Records and later in 2000 by K Records. It has been called "a dreamy, balladic tribute to the surreal aspects of the contemporary Californian landscape." Little Wings followed up this first release with The Wonder City and Wonderue to complete their Wonder Trilogy, consisting of three albums released on K and Knw-Yr-Own Records. In 2003, Little Wings released Harvest Joy , followed by Magic Wand in 2004 and Glow in 2005. He released Soft Pow'r in 2007. Kyle Field has played with the likes of Grandaddy, Lee Baggett, and Devendra Banhart, and is also a talented visual artist. A book of his drawings was published by the label Ahornfelder.

story of the night: the MidWest is well-represented with this show. Erica Fink, founder of DRESSES, is from Michigan - now located in the East Bay. She'll be joined by a supergroup line-up of Bob Thayer (Rad Cloud) on bass, Sean Olmstead (FpodBpod) on guitar, Indianna Hale on drums, & Matt Adams (the Blank Tapes) on shaker & percussion. She grew up listening to Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, & Gillian Welsh... whose influences she combines with a fun, whimsical, at times humorous & always honest & intriguing sense of music & life. In Erica's words: "Imagine a modest, two-bedroom home in West Virginia. There is a vegetable garden, one specifically placed sunflower and a kitschy ceramic duck peeping out behind a well-behaved shrub that lines the sidewalk to the front door. The door is dark red and decorated with a wooden, rustically painted "Home Sweet Home" sign. You are not home. You open the door, walk inside and find a family disco dancing on hand-made wooden tables in the living room. Barry White is playing on the family's out dated stereo system. The man of the household is belligerently singing into a vessel that could easily be mistaken for a miniature urn. He is singing to someone that isn't in the room. The daughters are lying on the floor, face down, pounding the dirty carpet with their feet, covering their ears while pleading with their father to turn down the music. They are embarrassed. The woman of the household frivolously pushes the furniture to the edges of the room as to make more room for the cartwheels she will inevitably incorporate into her disco-dance routine. The son, the youngest of the bunch, is fixated in a permanent headstand against the back wall of the living room. Each member of the family has a gentle disregard for the other. Barry White is on repeat and there is no end in sight. He also happens to be from Ohio (Ohio represent!) & has landed in the East Bay now too (East Bay represent!). He regularly plays in new sensations BELLS & ANNA ASH's bands, but here we will finally get to hear his own sounds. In Derek's words: The name Perhapsy comes from an E E Cummings’s poem entitled “warped this perhapsy.” The particular poem is somewhat disjointed and filled with words that end abruptly, run together, and letters that capitalize at random intervals. Listening to the self-titled debut of Perhapsy, one could draw comparisons to Cummings’s poetic stylings. The short, mostly instrumental songs bring to life a genre filled with run-on fragments and songs layered by guitar harmonies — often quick in pace yet also cyclical in form and structure. Rarely do debuts like this evoke so much hope, but of course this isn’t Derek Barber’s first project. After spending several years playing guitar in The Winston Jazz Routine and Every Gentle Air, Barber continued writing and playing shows with a revolving cast in Ann Arbor, MI while persuing dual degrees in jazz guitar and English. After wrapping up his degree in music, he felt it was time to properly document the songs — booking studio time in the hometown of Mansfield, Ohio with the goal of making the very first record for Perhapsy (with the help of some old friends). Currently Barber is putting together new works in his new home of Berkeley, CA. While an attractive contributor to East Bay's own BELLS and Anna Ash projects, Barber continues to write under the Perhapsy moniker. This music, while performed in both solo and ensemble format, sees Barber experimenting beyond previous instrumental work and into the territory of looping guitar effects, rhythmic experiments, and a newfound embrace of singing. The result has even been called a kind of "post-post rock" yet not without intentional humor or quantified definition. SUNDAY!! is the monthly seaweedsway showcase at the make-out room! Masuga, Miwa, & Moomaw (no kidding)... This is gonna be a really neat & sweet show, a gathering of three friends, whose names coincidentally sound really good together, playing their collections of stories through song. A mid-summer's dream. Miwa Gemini (acoustic/indie/folk/western swing) is traveling through on tour, from Brooklyn, NY; Moomaw (psychadelic country) moved away from the Bay Area to LA recently, so this is a reunion of sorts; & Ed Masuga (folk/blues/country/alt) is an east bay-er trekking to SF to blow us away with his fingerpicking song-writing genius. Good luck will come to all who attend. 7:30 doors, 8-11 songs. The show will be interspersed with Jeremy & the Absurdists interactive entertainment (last month, they became robots trying to understand the human emotion of love). only $7!

Sean Hayes’ old-time, folk roots still show through at times, but now they’re brushing up against a soul vibe that simmers slowly to a boil on his latest release, Run Wolves Run. Over the last decade, his six full-length albums reveal this evolution of sound. Poetic, sensual and surreal, the lyrics are equal part to the rhythm, beat and melody. For this show, Hayes will be joined by Ezra Lipp on drums and Eric Kuhn on everything else.
This July 14th show is one of only two performances this summer. Hayes is currently at work on a new album.

The brainchild of San Francisco's Sean Olmstead, fpodbpod is founded upon the principal tenet that pop music should be catchy while intriguing but always fun to listen to. Bringing an eclectic mix of influences--from the Kinks to Kraftwerk to Jonathan Richman to Gershwin--into the songs, fpodbpod re-contextualizes principles of soul, psychedelia and garage rock. Much the way that the Velvet Underground borrowed elements of soul and old school rock and roll, fpodbpod reminds us that POP is the common thread between all these styles of music we know and love.

While the recordings are historically a one-man operation, with Olmstead writing, performing and recording all the parts, fpodbpod's live shows often borrow the talents of local favorites such as Os Beaches' Joe Lewis and Joe Miller, Will Halsey of Ash Reiter's band, the Blank Tapes' Matt Adams and Steve Winchell, Indianna Hale, and many others.

Matt Bauer's Chasing the Moon

To open the night, we are premiering Matt Bauer's episode of Chasing the Moon on the night of the full thunder moon.

After writing an entire album centered on the unsolved 1968 murder of a girl near his childhood home (2008’s The Island Moved in the Storm), Matt Bauer has again turned to the subject of his native Kentucky with The Jessamine County Book of the Living (Crossbill Records), a record that is an intimate, personal, and often fantastical interpretation of the natural world.

Along with Bauer’s unique banjo melodies, played in a style that owes as much to Indonesian gamelan as it does to the music of Appalachia, the album boasts nearly 20 guest musicians from his current home of Brooklyn and his former home, San Francisco. Among them are frequent collaborator Jolie Holland, Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors), Mariee Sioux, Jay and Alex Foote (Sufjan Stevens, Welcome Wagon), and a ten piece orchestra of strings, brass, woodwinds, vibraphone and chimes.

As the past two episodes show, Chasing the Moon is branching out now to include artists outside of the Bay Area, though Matt lived in SF for some time.

We'd like to invite you to Quinn's CD Release Party at The Independent on Saturday, July 16th. Local favorites The Mumlers will open the night with their indie-pop-folk-dance tunes.

"Under Covers" is the debut album by Quinn DeVeauxand the Blue Beat Review. The sound is "blue beat" – music that stems from the RandB, New Orleans soul, and gospel that form the roots of rock and roll.

Quinn puts on a dynamic show with his 7-piece band, which includes piano, bass, drums, and three gospel-tinged female background singers. For the past two years he's been getting young crowds moving to his classic sounds, and is stirring up interest in roots music in the Bay Area. Quinn has already headlined The Independent, has performed at Outside Lands, and will be opening up for Aaron Neville at Stern Grove on August 7.

His debut CD is a tribute to his influences entitled "Under Covers". It's a very cool contemporary take on the roots of rock and R&B, with songs by Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, The Meters, Chris Kenner and the Soul Stirrers.

QUINN DEVEAUX - the Blue Beat & the the new album, Under Covers - Background

Qunn DeVeaux and the Blue Beat Review are on a mission to establish a new genre in modern music: Blue Beat. This music stems from RandB, New Orleans Soul, and Gospel - the roots of Rock and Roll. Blue Beat hearkens back to a period where musicians would actually play, and where the audience actually moved. It's more than a throwback, however, because times have changed, and music has to change as well.

QDBBR bridges the gap between today's dance floors and those of early rock and rollers like Chuck Berry, Ray Charles and Huey Piano Smith, and Quinn has the voice for it. He is raspy yet soothing to listen to, with declarative punctuations that let the listener know he means what he's singing about.

Their debut record titled Under Covers is a collection of grooves that the band has been playing alongside their original material to hone their sound and cement their influences. In the fall of 2010, the path ahead became clear. According to Quinn, "we simply had to make this record to pay homage to those who came before us, while at the same time bringing our own vibe to the mix." In this way, Under Covers paves the way for an album ofQuinn's original material which will be released early in 2012.

The band: Quinn's singing reflects his roots growing up outside of Chicago, while his electric guitar sounds like Muddy Waters channeled through The Kinks. Chris Siebert, on loan from Lavay Smith's Red Hot Skillet Lickers where he serves as band leader, burns up the keys. Down in the engine room that drives this train are Matthew MacGillivray ("Mattie Mac") on drums and Kenan O'Brien ("KO") on bass. Three backup singers, the "Quinntettes", provide warmth and movement. They sweeten the melodies, and crowds are often seen singing along and imitating the swaying singers.

The album: Produced by drummer Matthew MacGillivray, Under Covers features familiar tunes like "They All Asked For You" by The Meters and Sam Cooke’s "Good News" mixed in with lesser known numbers like the Soul Stirrers’ "Come and Go" and Muddy Waters’ "Tiger in Your Tank". The album was recorded mostly live, in the tradition of the original recordings, and sounds every bit as worthy a re-telling as when the Rolling Stones covered Robert Johnson’s classic Love in Vain. However, this record of covers also reflects trends in music which followed from these seminal tunes, from the British Invasion to recent soul revival acts such as Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

Under Covers is a party album with a broad range. It'll make you want to see this band live where you can kick off your shoes and dance, and it'll make you want to follow this band going forward. The party's just getting started…

hey everyone,

recently my friend bryant (aka beeface killah of the beehavers) was chatting with me & asked how long seaweedsway had been going. i realized it's been 7 years since i've been promoting here in the bay area. crazy! then we realized the show we were working on together would be on 7-7. perfect! we decided to celebrate 7 years of seaweedsway on 7-7, which is today. yay!

seaweedsway started with the weekly email list & blog, basically. thank you to all who have kept up with it over the years, even if you don't live here. my intention with this is to share the music i love & if you live here, maybe we get to meet up at these shows, have fun experiences, hang out, & hear good music. or practice yoga, dance, or even farm & garden together. if you are out of town or don't go to shows, i hope you listen to the bands sometimes & hear new sounds that might stay with you.

and tonight! we are celebrating seaweedsway's 7th anniversary at amnesia, with a kick-ass show. collin ludlow-mattson & the folks are releasing their cd, which features collin, matt adams (who also produced the album), lucas boilon, indianna hale, & sleepy todd. "the folks" tonight will include sean olmstead & will halsey as well. matt adams of the blank tapes is releasing a picnic plate vinyl of the song Double Rainbow, & will be joined by bandmembers will, sean, & maybe steve winchell (if he's back from the rainbow gathering on time). the beehavers are whole-heartedly opening the night, with their voodoo folk-rock highly dance-able tunes. show starts at 9 and is $7-10.

hi everyone,

hope you all enjoyed the lunar eclipse on wednesday. (did anyone actually see it?)

show highlight of the week: tomorrow (sunday 6/19) is the monthly seaweedsway showcase at the make-out room. it's father's day, so bring your dad (if you want)!

this month, we have a rocking line-up, with ruckus rousing folk-rocker Obo Martin otherwise known as Freckle Face, the pop/rock/psychadelic soul tunes of FpodBpod, & female-fronted folk rock explosion Fox & Woman. Jeremy Dalmas & the Absurdists, SeaweedSway Showcase hosts, are doing a soap opera too! (we are all in for a treat)

PRACTICE SPACE AVAILABLE AT SECRET STUDIOS

From il gato: We are looking for a band to fill a rehearsal slot at Secret Studios (2200 Cesar Chavez, SF, CA). You would have to share a drum set (yours or ours) with one of the current bands due to lack of space, though there is ample rehearsal and storage space for your band in the room. Waiting Room got a new practice space in Oakland and is looking for another band to share it. It's a few blocks from the Coliseum bart station. It's 12 by 18 ft, fan, dimmer switch. They're going to put a piano in there. So far, there are two bands sharing it. It's $455 all together, and so far they have 6 people splitting the cost... Hello, local SF band, il gato (http://www.ilgato.com), are in need of a multi-instrumentalist who can play trumpet/flugelhorn and an additional instrument, ideally one of the following: Piano, Guitar, Accordion, Banjo, etc.

We are a serious band with a good track record, grand aspirations, and are looking for a talented musician who shares our aspirations and the associated commitments and wants to be a part of an on-going creative project. We all sing, we help write songs and we want this to be an awesome experience. We intend to record our next album in the Fall and tour in 2012.
